DR AJ CARSTENS - Breast & Woman's Health Centre
Dr Alwyn Carstens is a physcician with a special interest in Woman's Health and specifically Breast Health. ​He practices as a Breast Radiologist in Pretoria South Africa.
Over 1600 woman with breast cancer attend the centre for treatment and follow-up and another16000 for other breast problems and screening. ​He started his career as Family Practitioner (GP) in 1975 and practiced for years in a rural town. While in GP practice, he obtained his Masters Degree in family Medicine (M.Prax.Med) and M.F.G.P membership of the College of Medicine of S.A.​He then went back to fulltime study and in 1986 qualified as a diagnostic Radiologist M.Med.Rad(D) at University of Pretoria. He practiced as a General radiographer for the next 10 years & obtained expertise in Ultrasound, Intervention, Angiography, CT & MRI.​
His interest in Breast radiology was ignited whilst working abroad, upon returning to SA he started his own Breast Care Centre - His mission is to empower woman to take part in the decision making of their own health . To educate and inform woman about health, issues and making the right choices.

What is Breast Cancer ?
Breast cancer starts when your own breast cells start to grow abnormally and out of control. There are different kinds of breast cancer. The kind of breast cancer depends on which cells in the breast turn into cancer. Most breast cancers begin in the ducts or lobules.
Risk Factors
* Use of hormonal contraceptives
* Use of Hormonal Replacement Therapy
* Having a close blood relative with cancer
* If you drink more than 2 alcoholic drinks a day
* Having a personal history of cancer

What can you do?
Early detection really does save lives - the earlier a cancer is detected the better the prognosis and the more treatment options are available. We want to stop a cancer before it spreads.
* Do regular self-examinations, feel & get to know your own breasts
* Annual screening Ultrasound under the age of 40
* Annual mammogram over the age of 40 accompanied by an Ultrasound
* Clean up your lifestyle and eating habits & exercise more regularly to help your body function more optimally
